Creating high-quality exams in African schools and universities is a major challenge. Teachers and lecturers spend Days per exam typing questions, building answer keys, and reformatting for WAEC, NECO, JAMB, or Moodle. With heavy teaching loads and limited tools, many end up reusing old questions or generic content, which hurts alignment with the curriculum and exam quality.
EXAMGEN AFRICA needed a way to turn existing teaching materials—PDFs, handwritten notes, even lecture audio—into professional, curriculum-aligned exams in minutes, while supporting the formats African educators actually use.
The main challenge was to design a product that works for a wide range of educators—from primary teachers to university lecturers—while keeping the experience simple and fast. Balancing automation with control (e.g. difficulty, question count, exam style) was essential so that generated exams feel professional and trustworthy.
Supporting multiple input types (PDF, images, audio, text) and multiple output formats (student PDF, marking key, Aiken, Moodle XML) in one flow required careful design so that the same exam could be used for print, school CBT, and university LMS without extra work from the teacher.
The EXAMGEN AFRICA project successfully addresses the burden of exam creation for African educators. By combining AI-powered extraction from multiple input formats, curriculum-aligned question generation, and one-click export to four formats (Student PDF, Marking Key, Aiken, Moodle XML), the platform saves 10+ hours per exam and keeps quality high. Teachers can focus on teaching while still getting exams that fit WAEC, NECO, JAMB, and university Moodle requirements.
